Earlier Roots: Manipuri Vaishnavism Tradition
Royal Patronage
Manipur's devotional tradition began in the early 18th century when influential monarchs like King Pamheiba (Gharib Nawaz) and King Bhagyachandra formally embraced the teachings of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.
Cultural Integration
Royal patronage popularized Radha-Krishna worship and cultural arts like Rasa Lila dancing, making them intrinsic to Meitei identity.
Artistic Tradition
Vaishnava practices became deeply woven into local culture through dance, music, and storytelling traditions.
Cultural Decline: By the 20th century, social upheavals and changing influences led to a decline in structured Vaishnava observance, especially among younger generations. This created the perfect context for ISKCON's revitalization mission.
